Are you starting out in a leadership role? These tips will help you get off on the right foot
If you're just starting in a leadership role or are exploring this path, I'm sharing the resources that have been instrumental in my journey. During the pandemic, I took on a leadership role that taught me valuable lessons and helped me develop crucial skills. In this article, you'll discover practical strategies, must-read books, and podcasts that will guide you to lead successfully and confidently from day one.
LEADERSHIP
If you are starting in a supervisory or leadership position or if it is a path you would like to take, here are a bunch of resources that have helped me on this path.
Four years ago during the uncertainty of the pandemic, I was able to work as a team leader - the literal name of the position which, without wanting to translate it better, I always used as inspiration - opening a path that I will continue to strengthen for life.
1. Learn from day to day:
Although I will mention some books later, it is crucial to remember what figures such as Leila Hormozi in her videos on leadership have stressed: the importance of listening, being present and being accessible to your team.
2. Ensure adequate follow-up to strategies:
Make sure that the strategies you launch to the team have an adequate follow-up channel, the typical, "do not remove recurring meetings", "respond to each of the comments that your team shares with you", etc.
Everything I tell you here is more about learning from mistakes than "first-time success stories," because as many say, leadership is a dichotomy, starting with knowing when to be a leader and when to be a follower of your team.
3. Identify communication styles:
Spend time understanding the communication styles of each individual and finding your own leadership style. When iterating strategies, give it enough time for consistency to allow you to evaluate their effectiveness. Never stop learning and improving your communication skills.
After understanding that it is not in podcasts or books where the secret of leadership lies, I share with you some that, however, were quite useful to me:
📙 Conscious Business: This book allows you to imagine the harmony that can be achieved in a team when we understand the pillars that the author reviews.
📘 Peopleware: With almost 40 years since its publication, it is still relevant because, as the authors point out, although technology has advanced, the root of all challenges remains human, not technological
📗 The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (+ The Eighth Habit): The structure of the book, which distinguishes between public and private victories, helps us understand ourselves as interdependent beings within the organization and society
I also share with you a couple of podcast episodes that reinforce the importance of strengthening the personal leadership mindset, the most important step on this path:
🔊 The "Bronze Medal Mindset" (and 4 More Surpiring Habits From Olympians): Mel Robbins talks about the Olympians and how this mindset can enhance your personal strength. Check out the episode here.
🔊 What Top 1% Performers Do That You Don’t (ft. Danica Patrick): An episode in which Codie Sanchez (Biz Buyer) and Danica Patrick (Nascar Racer) talk about sports careers, leadership, self-perception, and high-level performance. Listen to the conversation here.
